The Wild Riders haven't been holding my attention so I switched gears and started on the Night Spinner turrets this past Tuesday. The cockpits and undersides are done while the orange got started. I've since finished that up and got the barrels glued on since this picture was taken.

Warsow Down, FOSS Sauerbraten Fork And Maybe An Unkown Project?

Assorted news from the vast realm of open-source FPS games:
  1. Sadly Warsow, despite recentish good news of open asset re-licensing, seems to have come to an end, with the lead engine developer stepping down and general chaos in its wake. Initially I thought it would sort itself out somehow, but after a few months things look still bad. And an forking attempt also seems to have fizzled. So, maybe YOUR chance to step up and take over a brand new fork? It includes nice relatively unknown game modes similar to Team Fortress and Counterstrike "bombing", so one could try to refocus and re-brand everything.
  2. Maybe old news, but it seems people finally got sick of the lack of development and restricting assets licenses of Sauerbraten, and decided to start a nice fork called Inexor. From the looks of it, engine development is quite active and new asset licensing should make the result fully FOSS. They even plan to back-port some nice stuff from Tesseract (sadly also very low profile development on that one).
  3. Not yet released, but projectUnkown is a cool one-man-show project, with extremely liberal game-code and assets licensing (CC0). It will utilize the latest and best of the Quake1 derived engines FTEQW, and has been recently showcased on the QuakeExpo2016.
  4. Another unreleased WIP is the Darkplaces based "A Dark Place" (sic) single player FPS. Check out their development screen-shots on our forums and on quakeone.com.
  5. And last but not least it looks like the the Alien Arena (open-source Quake2 based engine with closed art assets) is getting yet another major content upgrade. Amazing how much endurance they have in updating this game...

THE WAY FORWARD - IESF'S ACTING VICE-PRESIDENT.

Magnus Jonsson is now serving as the acting Vice-President.
With the unexpected resignation of Silviu Stroei from International Esports Federation's Board, a position has opened up on the Board which IESF will have to fill as soon as possible if the Board is to continue to fire on all cylinders.

As a stop-gap, IESF has temporarily appointed Board member, Magus Jonsson, of Sweden, to act as Acting Vice-President. Such appointment shall only be in force until the Board appoints a Board member formally to hold such office.

It is the President's considered opinion that such position must be filled as soon as possible for the following reasons:
  • Should the President be absent, it is the Vice-President that must immediately step up to the plate and continue with the President's workoad, and
  • The Vice-President has oversight of the World Championships.
Thus IESF's Board has selected Magnus Jonsson to act as acting Vice-President until further notice.

Colin Webster, President of IESF, says of Magnus, "Magnus is a valued Board member who has served IESF well during his terms of office and is more than capable of acting as a caretaker of such an important office."

DreamForge-Games Price Increase.

We started down the road to manufacturing plastic kits in 2012, a lot has happened since then. I have seen shipping prices nearly double, WGF has ceased to be our distributor and we have taken over that aspect of operations. We now purchase our kits from WGF China directly.
We recently place two restock orders to bring our stock levels back on par, the shipping costs have been an eye opener. In many cases shipping from China to the US was more than the actual cost to manufacture a kit. Some kits needed to be brought in line with their cost of production. This price increase was as minimal as we could make it most items will see an increase of 5% to 8% with some more drastic adjustments to kits that were selling into distribution at a lower than delivered cost to us.
To maintain the health of DreamForge-Games it has become clear that we will need to implement a price increase, effective February 15th2016

[Three Hexes] Twilight Of Adventure

Campaign: It is the Last Age of  Homo Sapiens on Earth, a dying world long sucked dry of its essence and resources by countless millennia of generations. Thousands of years ago, the bulk of human race left, leaving behind civilization in ruins; those left began to plunder and pillage, setting themselves up as kings and queens fighting over the leftover scrap. Now even those remains are dying off and falling apart; with the remaining population looking for ways to leave themselves, if possible anymore. 

Homebase (Hex 0) (0101): Eclandria - The decaying city of the Nine Queens, once the pinnacle of humankind's achievements, with spires that reached up nearly into space, then fought over by countless factions after The Exodus, now a shell of ruins and farmlands interspersed among rebuilt edifices and smaller towers. The few remaining Servicers continue to attempt to repair themselves and other bits of technology, while the Defenders rust and rot, allowing raiders steal away what remains of the wealth of the city. The remaining Queen has devoted all of her resources to recovering enough technology to repair the last of the Great Silver Arks, but time is running out as energy cells fail and her educated Thinkers die of old age.




Three Hexes
(Hex scale is 24 miles)

Location 1 (0001): Ordrung - Once a massive facility for a long forgotten military unit of the Before times, this fortress is now home to a barbaric, vicious band bent on a final victory. Their kidnap raids on Eclandria has led to the capture of many of the young children of the city now serving as slaves of the gang. Several Eclandrian rescue teams have instead supplied the thugs with updated equipment and a Servitor, which they're now using as a guardian wandering the area around the crumbling edifice.

Location 2 (0201): Capcanav - Festooned with bright banners, tents and dozens of aged humans, the ancient starport also hosts several decayed hulks of spaceships - the Great Arks. The Elders hold daily meditations and rituals in worship of "Those Who Have Gone Up", believing that the long-gone travelers have become gods and will return if humanity is humble enough. The Elders are dismayed at the Eclandrian attempts to repair an Ark and are trying to raise an army to resist them.

Location 3 (0102): Alexindia - The Library of Knowledge and Death is contained in a vast maze underground, full of strange flickering illusions that speak in long-lost languages, crystal discs said to contain forgotten knowledge, and strange metal cabinets full of decaying material. A cult of priests has made themselves guardians of the knowledge, believing that they must die in order to understand what is contained within the archives. On a regular basis, they commit suicide (or kill each other) and resurrect/revive the dead in order to perform a "learning".


"Three Hexes" are simple campaign starters to show that you don't need to do a lot to have interesting settings for people to play in. Feel free to use these in your game, campaign or as ways to spur on your own creativity and imagination!

I've purposefully left a lot of detail out because these are supposed to spur on your imagination! The scale is what I would use in my own world, but if something else suits you better, then go for it. I may have the features moved about on the hexes for clarity, if they don't suit you, move them!
